Prayer part II

On my last post, let me give you a perfect example of why not getting what you pray for is sometimes a good thing. One of my personal prayers has been for more money (pretty common). My wife and I are in constant financial difficulties and I have to be very frugal with our limited income. Before, I went through it like water. If God had granted my prayers, I would probably be in the same boat because before I didn't have a reason to be a spendthrift. Even though I didn't realize it at the time, I would most likely be a different person if I were rich.
I went so far as to promise God to do nothing but good with my money and even start my own church. At the time I was not purposely trying to trick God (as if I could) but I sincerely meant what I said. I was perplexed at why God wouldn't come through on my prayers since I felt my intentions were sincere. God knew better. At the time, I was angry, frustrated and disillusioned. Prayer just didn't work. Now, Romans 1:22 comes to mind "Professing to be wise, they became fools." In my own ignorance, I thought I knew better than God. The only thing I can tell you now is I may not be rich, but I am definitely happy.

Why doesn't God answer my prayers?

Why doesn't God answer more prayers? I have thought long and hard about this and I believe I can answer some of the questions. The first and easiest answer is that not all prayers should be answered. If you are not frugal with your money and always spend it in frivolous ways, what wold be the point of praying for more money and then wasting it? If you pray for healing but will continue to live a life that is fraught with unhealthy habits, are you to be healed only to make yourself sick again?
Another answer is a matter of faith. If God answered every good and well meaning prayer, what would become of faith? Who wouldn't believe in God if all our prayers would be answered? Would YOU want your children to love you merely because you gave them all manner of gifts? Or would you rather that their love came from a deep and abiding feeling that comes from the heart? God is not going to pay you to love Him. It's a simple as that.
What about the prayers from people who are not praying for their own self interests but who truly need help? I believe wholeheartedly in intercessory prayer but we are also given control over our own destinies as well (freewill). Have you ever stood by when someone you knew needed help? Maybe YOU were they answer to that persons prayer and yet you did nothing. We are responsible for all the things we do as well as all the things we DON'T do. So the next time you want to blame God because He didn't answer your prayers, remember that even though we may not always understand His plans, sometimes the best answer to a prayer is none at all (I know this answer may sound trite to some, but without faith that He knows and hears our prayers, our prayers just become a cacophony of meaningless sound).

I think the phrase "My prayers are with you" is becoming just a saying like telling someone "God bless you" after they sneeze. How often do we hear someone say that exact phrase with no sincerity or conviction? I would have to believe that if there was that much praying going on in the world that it would be a much better place.
Don't get me wrong, I am not bashing prayer. Prayer is a wonderful and powerful experience. Unfortunately it has just become something people say to express sympathy. We need to take back the phrase "My prayers are with you" and use it as it was intended. A powerful tool in our fight with the forces of this world, a way to express our deep and abiding love to our Savior and our heavenly Father, and as a means to continually communicate our hopes and needs to the one who holds our happiness and well being in His highest esteem. "Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (1 Thessalonians 5:15-18).

My sincerest prayers go out to all the victims in Boston. Even though we cannot fully fathom why someone would perpetrate something like this, we can be fully assured that God will watch over those families that have been affected by this tragedy. "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you  (John 14:1-2 ).

When are we going to throw out the moneychangers?
"And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all of them who sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves." (Matthew 21:12-13)
There are some many "religious" institutions that are doing the same thing. You must tithe to become righteous. You must attend our church, follow our standards, buy our religious paraphernalia. God doesn't need your money, He wants your heart. You don't have to wear the best clothes, have the largest bible or wear the biggest cross around your neck. "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted" (Mathew  23:12). It's as simple as that.

Bible Questions Answered

Bible Questions Answered
How many of you parents have ever had their children mad at them because you wouldn't give them something they want or wouldn't condone their behavior (I'll assume everyone's hand went up)? Did you disown them or hate them because of their behavior? If you show your children this much love, how much love do you think God (the very definition of the word love) shows you? Do you think that because you may "act up" from time to time that God would abandon you? God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”(Hebrews 13:5).
The world has this image of satan as a freewheeling fun guy and God as this stern task master doling out punishment to all who do not please Him. To be perfectly blunt, what a crock. The only thing satan wants to do is drag you down to hell where he is going. You can have your 15 minutes of "fun" (not the word that I would chose but as some people perceive it) and pay for it for the rest of eternity.
The other option is to truly put your life in the hands of our heavenly Father who loves you and cares for you. The world can offer your children fun for a little while, but it eventually ends. The love of God is just like when your child curls up in your arms, lays their head on your chest, and knows that you love them only a thousand times more powerful (and that, my friends, is a love that will never end).
