Hell and the disappearing Christian

Why did Jesus come down to earth and live and die here? Surely, God, in his infinite wisdom could have come up with a better way than to not only have his Son crucified and die for our sins, but reviled, spit on and abused. I believe Christ was put on this earth to get to know us personally and also so that we may know that He knows what it is like to be human and to suffer physically and spiritually.
So, you have the Son, who intercedes on our behalf to the Father. Jesus knows us, he loves us and he died for us, and that love is so encompassing that he is willing to forgive all the vile acts we have committed in our lives.
Now, let's look at the Father in the Old Testament before Jesus. He was very vengeful. He didn't put up with a lot of nonsense from the Israelites. He had a kind of "my way or the highway" attitude. The fact that Jesus has to intercede (To plead on another's behalf) for us tells me that The Father Hasn't changed his attitude, but out of love for his Son and for us he is withholding his vengeance.
My long winded point being that I take the Father and Son analogy literally. If you had a Son that went through what Jesus did, and He begged you not to harm those who don't accept him, out of love you will do as he wishes, But I still think that part of you would like to go back and repay what was done, hence the judgement.
Here's where I'll get the most complaints. I don't see the US or any other nation as a Christian nation. You have to be TOTALLY committed to Christ. Not when you have time, not as an afterthought, not when you feel like being a Christian, it has to be all day every day. Look at TV, the news, radio, the internet. The actual percentage of these mediums that has Christian content and is popular is so miniscule that it doesn't even register.
The actual amount of TRUE believers is a minority. Right now God is a bumper sticker or a t-shirt to most people. I get it. I to feel the tremendous love that Jesus has put in our hearts for the unsaved. If I could I would give each person a hug and just share with them the love that Christ has for them. The problem is that most people either don't believe in hell, or if they do, God is to much of a nice guy to send them there. That fault lies totally on our shoulders.
Christians today are fence sitters. They go so far out of their way to not offend anyone so that they can witness to them that have people believing that God is, to put it bluntly, a pushover. So many believe that they can just accept Jesus the moment before they die, and BAM, their in heaven.
That is what I believe the message "go prepare the way for the time is soon at hand" meant. It is not a direct revelation that God is coming tomorrow (could be but know man knows when). I believe He was telling me to tell the Christians of today to get out of in front of the TV, go out, and at least act like the end is coming tomorrow. I include myself in that message.
I pray every night that everything I ever do. say or think brings glory to God and is in accordance with His will. I sincerely pray that if it is His will that I go blind so that I make a better witness to those who are handicapped, than so be it. I have total faith that God is in complete control of my life and that I will humbly accept anything that he believes will make me a better servant.
